from the Orcas Island Food Co-op
The first membership benchmark of 250 founding Co-op members was reached and surpassed on Tuesday, October 29th, less than three weeks into our membership drive. The outpouring of community support and enthusiasm for the birth of a true full-service member-owned Food Co-op on Orcas has been truly inspiring.
To all of you who have become members, or lent a hand or a word of encouragement along the way, Thank you so much!
Help us maintain our momentum by continuing to spread the word as we move toward lease signing and our eventual goals of 350 members by December 1st and 450 members by January 1st.

As I understand it, the Orcas Food Co-op and members to date have a highly ethical vision of this new enterprise, and I do trust the founders. We know the founders are very busy now, but we haven’t yet seen any details about the “Vendor Partner Program” with local farmers and producers. I hope the “Program” will identify the healthy, diverse, year-round food supply as the primary goal of a local food philosophy. I hope the Co-op will adopt this tenet and define it according to our local circumstances.
