Saturday, August 9 – Friday, September 12, Lynn White Contemporary Art
— from Lynn White —
Lynn White Contemporary Art is pleased to present an exhibition by Jasmine Valandani. The gallery is located at 109 North Beach Road at the very back of Eastsound Square. (The gallery entrance is accessed from the parking lot side of the building). Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. To 3:00 p.m.
Jasmine Valandani’s drawings and sculptures describe interior and exterior worlds, ones we can hold close in our hand and ones we experience. These defined spaces are manifest in two distinct bodies of work. In the drawings, “court series” and “entrances,” Valandani applied white gouache onto found grid paper. Her architectural drawings of inner sanctuaries appear through the removal of all that is extra. Lines emerge in the areas absent of paint, revealing courtyards, geometries, that are evocative of traditional garden spaces. Painting over, effectively erasing areas, quiets the noise, so that the shape of space we can move through becomes visible. The viewer is both on the inside, and the outside, invited to contemplation or simply passing through.
A group of small sculptural works, titled “the world in the palm of your hand,” is made from shells, metal leaf and gouache. They exude the pleasure of intimate worlds, small architectures found in nature, altered, emphasized. Through a light gesture Valandani illuminates the structures. Valandani’s work explores geometry found in the natural world, and those created, seeking connection to nature, and the unseen.
