Iraq Veteran Mike Page greets elementary student

New Orcas Elementary School Principal Kathy Page and her husband Mike, a veteran who served with the U.S. Army in Iraq are organizing a new event to honor Veteran’s Day.

Kathy is organizing a Veteran’s Appreciation Ceremony and Breakfast on Friday, November 8, at 8:30 a.m.

Orcas Island Elementary will hold a Veteran Appreciation Ceremony and Breakfast on Friday, November 8 at 8:30 a.m. to honor the great women and men who have served our country.

“The honor of your presence has been requested!” reads the invitation to veterans and their spouses who are cordially invited to the ceremonies in the school cafeteria.

An 8:30 assembly will be followed by a breakfast in honor of the veterans.

Vets are asked to either call or email to confirm they are attending so the appropriate amount of food can be prepared.Volunteers are also being asked to assist on that day, and to be sure to contact Principal Page so that they can included in the count. “It is the very least I could do for your generosity!” she says.

If possible, it is requested that veterans come in uniform or wear something that signifies their branch of service in the military for students to see.

“I have held appreciation ceremonies like this at other schools where I was a principal and I always walk away from them knowing that we probably got more out of it than the Veterans.   It certainly feels good to say thank you…and for our children to see and feel what gratitude is all about,” says Page.
