Guss, Gregory and Sauer headed for victory in contested district positions

San Juan County Elections Office reported at 8 p.m. on Nov. 8 with 5,787 ballot counted (out of a registered electorate of 11,573).

The Orcas public school’s One-Year Capital Projects Levy (Proposition No. 1 Orcas Island School District #137) has a comfortable margin supporting it, with 852 votes approving (57.07 percent) against 641 votes opposed (42.93 percent) in the count of 1,493 votes.

The Land Bank Renewal Fee vote (San Juan County Proposition No. 1 Extension through 2026 of Conservation Area Real Estate Excise Tax) has come in at 2,908 voters in favor (51.24 percent) 2,767 votes opposed (48.76 percent).

The Solid Waste User Charge for Management of Solid Waste (San Juan County Proposition No. 2) has been emphatically turned down by 3,820 votes opposed (69.51 percent) to 1,676 votes in favor (30.49 percent).

The closest race on Orcas Island appears to be among the County Council District 5 Charter Review Commissioner candidates. Three candidates will be elected.

Of a total of 1,337 votes counted in that race:

  • Leonard Wood has received 23.41%
  • Moana Kutsche has won 25.88%
  • Linda Tretheway has received 23.41%
  • Stephen Garrison has won 27.3%

Of 1,180 votes cast for Port of Orcas Commissioner 2, Dwight Guss has won the race with 872 votes or 73.9 percent over Gary Abood, who gained 308 votes, or 26.1 percent.

In a contest of 1,055 votes for Orcas Port Commissioner 3, Sheldon Gregory has defeated incumbent Al Edwards, with 641 votes (60.76 percent) for Gregory, and 414 votes (39.24 percent) for Edwards.

The contested Eastsound Sewer and Water District race between Roger Adams and Rollie Sauer has been decided in Sauer’s favor, with 274 votes or 63.13 percent as opposed to Adams; 160 votes, or 36.87 percent of the 434 votes tabulated thus far.

Seventeen precincts have reported in, and 5,787 ballots counted. The next report from the County Elections office will be issued at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. It is estimated that there are 1,500 ballots county-wide left to count.
