“True Grit” read by the Darvill’s Book Club group Discussion of the Charles Portis’ Western will be led by Al Bentley at 5:30 p.m.

Movie Night at Doe Bay Cafe Movie starts at 7 p.m., free popcorn at show time, half-priced bottles of wine. There is full dinner service and half price bottles of wine, as well as free popcorn at showtime! Please call the Cafe for dinner reservations at 360-376-8059.

Granny’s Attic Sale donations drop off from noon to 3 p.m. at the Senior Center. The sale is on Saturday, April 16.

Orcas School All Parents Koffee Klatch Coffee, tea and donuts at the Orcas School from 8 to 9 a.m. under the Maple Tree. Indoors if the weather is inclement. Sponsored by Readiness to Learn and the PTSA.

Special School Board Meeting Orcas Island School District Board of Directors meets to discuss projected enrollment for 2011-2012 and acceptance of a $900,000 Department of Commerce energy retrofit grant. 5:30 p.m. at the School Library.

Thursday, April 14

Celebrity Chef at Orcas Public School Chef Matt Carpenter of Deer Harbor Inn Restaurant prepares codfish wraps, home made split pea soup and strawberry shortcake at the school cafeteria. Public welcome, $5 per lunch. Vegetarian option available.

Kids and Drugs on Orcas Island Deputy Bruce Distler, the “Drug Recognition Expert” with the Orcas Island Sheriff’s Office will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the PTSA  from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The Cancer Support group meets at the Orcas Island Community Church in the Fireside Room. If you, or anyone you know, is dealing with issues related to cancer, please come, 5:00 pm. Granny’s Attic Sale at the Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds benefit operations of the Senior Center at the County Office Buildings.

Jane Barfoot-Hodde honored at the rededication of the San Juan Island Grange. All Grange members in San Juan County are invited to attend the Rededication of San Juan Island Grange #966. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., a special Degree team will be conferring the first four degrees of the Grange. This event is open to all Grange members. The full ritual degree work of the first four degrees of the Grange as traditionally conducted for over a century is a great opportunity to renew your understanding of the Grange. It is quite beautiful and very powerful. At the end of the day there will be a contra dance with a live caller, all in time for a return home on the ferry.

Grace McCune and Carolyn Cruso play at the Madrona Bar & Grill from 8pm-11pm. This is Carolyn’s last show before going on tour.

Crossroads Lecture with Simon Winchester 2 p.m. at Orcas Center. Winchester presents “The Fascination of China:  Past, Present and Future” bringing decades of high profile experience as an author and journalist to elucidate unique perspectives about China and how it has evolved into the industrial and financial giant of today. Orcas Island Poets and Poetry Lovers Celebrate National Poetry Month by sharing original poems as well as favorite poems in an informal gathering in the Madrona Room at 7:30 p.m. Poet and poetry teacher, JoEllen Moldoff and poet, Ed Wilson have curated the event which includes 19 Orcas poets.
