George Post and Velma Doty make use of the Citizen Access time with the County Council, accessed on Orcas Island through videoconferencing. Tony Ghazel, right, assisted with the set-up of the remote access system.

This morning, the San Juan County Council activated videoconferencing as a way to provide citizen access on Orcas and Lopez Islands during Council meeting times in Friday Harbor.

On Orcas Island, the morning session of the council dealing with redistricting was streamed live at the Orcas Island Public Library.  Velma Doty, George Post and Jack Conant spoke to the Council during the 10 to 11:30 a.m. time slot.

The system worked well, they said, although the sound was a bit muffled. (The muffling was attributed to a feature in the system’s microphone by which the effect of wind is minimized).

Because of prior scheduling of the library’s confernece room, the full meeting was not available by videoconference. Velma Doty commented after the videoconference ended, “We’re fortunate to have this availability.”

The County Council will meet on Orcas Island next Tuesday, Sept. 27. The next videoconference on Orcas is scheduled for Oct. 18.
