San Juan County Public Works will be unloading several thousand tons of material onto San Juan and Lopez Island on Tuesday, August 22 and Wednesday, August 23. The barge landing area will be closed to the public during these operations.
Walrath Marine, a Tacoma-based company specializing in material trucking and tug and barge services, will deliver 3,000 tons of road sand and 3,000 tons of road maintenance aggregate to the islands. On San Juan Island, the barge will land at Griffin Bay and material will be hauled to the Public Works yard located on Beaverton Valley Road. On Lopez Island, the barge will land at MacKaye Harbor (Norman Rd) and material will be stockpiled onsite. This material is critical to the Public Works Department’s ability to respond to winter weather and chip seal county roads. Bulk delivery is the most effective way to transport material to the county and greatly reduces the number of vehicle trips on our roads and ferries. .
What to expect at Griffin Bay, San Juan Island:
- Access to the barge landing area is closed
- Public access to Jackson Beach remains open
- Expect truck traffic and possible delays
What to expect at MacKaye Harbor, Lopez Island:
- The road will be closed to the public
- Expect truck traffic and possible delays
