At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, San Juan County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to a one-car motor vehicle crash in the 2600 block of Crow Valley Road on Orcas Island. Responders found a 2010 Hyundai Accent crashed into a tree. The vehicle was unoccupied.
In attempting to locate the driver of the vehicle it was determined that the driver was Maria Massey, age 26 of Deer Harbor. She had reportedly left her house sometime around midnight and had not been seen or heard from since.
Sheriff Deputies and Orcas Fire and Rescue personnel conducted an extensive search of the area surrounding the crash with no success. Throughout the day, Wednesday, efforts to locate Massey continued by emergency responders, family, friends, and the community.
Thursday morning, at first light, a more extensive search was launched by local emergency responders and search dogs from Kitsap and Snohomish Counties, specially trained Mantrackers from Snohomish County, and local volunteers.
At approximately 9:50 a.m. Maria Massey was found dead near a pump house in the 2300 block of Crow Valley Road. Investigation into her disappearance and cause of death continues. An autopsy is pending by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.
