Orcas Center’s Madrona Room overflows with song Tuesday evenings, as the Orcas Choral Society prepares for its winter concert. With 14 new and newly returned members this fall, the choir numbers almost 70 voices.
“One of the first things I did when I knew I would be a full-time island resident is look for a choir,” said Elise Newhouse, alto. She’s in her third year as a Summer Program Director for Camp Orkila, but until now, she worked non-summer months out of the downtown Seattle YMCA.
“I actually found the Choral Society online,” Newhouse said. “When I learned Marianne would be conducting, that was great! I grew up singing in the youth choir of the Oregon Repertory Singers; she was the adult choir’s accompanist.”
Jennifer Smith, tenor, also just moved to Orcas – from Imperial, Nebraska.
“My husband researched all the places where the temperature tends to stay between 30 and 70 degrees,” she explained. “We love it here – no triple digits!”
“I sang in school and in a community choir in Imperial. It’s very similar,” Smith said. “You’re nice people!”
“I look forward to rehearsals and the camaraderie of the members,” said Gael Shipstad, soprano. She sang with the Choral Society for 18 years before taking a break. Now, she’s back. “I really enjoy Broadway tunes, and I love Christmas music. Marianne has picked some great Christmas music this year that will help everyone get in the spirit of the season,” Shipstad said.
“I enjoy singing with the Choral Society,” said Eric Gourley, bass, also recently returned. “I like a good variety of music.”
