Chili Cookoff to benefit the Holiday Giving Tree

It doesn’t matter whether you like it spicy, sweet or mild, there is a chili flavor for you. The fourth annual Chili Cook-off will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Village Green. For $10, you can enjoy 10 samples of chili. There is also a beer garden.

All proceeds from the chili tasting and voting go toward buying gifts for the Island Market Giving Tree to ensure that no island child goes without a gift during the Christmas season. “The Giving Tree is such a good cause and the Chili Cook-off is a great event to welcome fall,” said organizer Jennifer Pietsch. “It has become a tradition.”

Last year’s event raised $2,300 and featured a true Texas chili, a vegetarian chili, a lamb chili and a home-grown pork chili. Gil Bacera won the 2014 event.

We are also looking for some community volunteers to help sell tickets, serve chili and just help with general policing. Please, respond to Jim Biddick at 360-376-2488 or jimbiddick@aol.com or just show up on the Village Green between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
