The Olga Strawberry Council will sponsor a cement sculpture workshop on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshop will take place “under the big top” tent at the upper lot behind the Orcas Center.
The cost for both days is $145 plus $50 materials fee. A registration payment of $50 is required to sign up for the workshop.
Instructor Donald Latimer owns the company, Artisan Finishes. He has worked in the> plastering field since the early 1970s when he worked with a plastering crew that did ‘Ferro-Cement’ boats.
He has also worked doing swimming pool and a variety of concrete projects.
For the last eight years, he has focused on working with Milestone, developing techniques and processes for doing a variety of applications.
Latimer has completed hundreds of jobs, both residential and commercial, and regularly coaches people through projects around the country. He also teaches workshops in sculptural art at Pratt Fine Art Center, a local Seattle art school.
Co-instructor Elizabeth Dennis has been working with milestone for 8 years, and has used Artisan finishes doing installation, color samples and color consultation for three years. She also co-teaches with Latimer at Pratt Fine Arts sculpting workshops.
Mia Kartiganer, event organizer, says,” This will be a wonderful weekend of learning, playing and being creative. It will be an intensive workshop, so be ready. Bring old clothes, gloves, and any favorite plastering tools or safety equipment you would like to use.”
All materials and tools necessary will be provided. The methods used, and information given, will have application in many other projects, says Kartiganer. Contact her at 376-2108 to register or for any questions.
