"Hustle" by Jason Skipper, will be the featured reading at the Kangaroo House Salon next Monday

The Orcas writers’ community will gather Monday, February 6 at 7 p.m. at Kangaroo House Bed and Breakfast in Eastsound for a living room salon and reading by featured writer Jason Skipper.

Skipper is the author of the novel Hustle. His work has appeared in numerous journals, including Hotel Amerika and Mid-American Review, with awards and recognition from Zoetrope: All-Story, Glimmer Train, and Crab Orchard Review.

In addition, he is the recipient of grants from Artist Trust and the Vermont Studio Center. He studied in the Master’s program at Miami University and in the PhD in Creative Writing program at Western Michigan University, where he was fiction editor of Third Coast. He teaches creative writing and literature at Pacific Lutheran University and lives in Tacoma.

Hustle was praised by eminent writer Charles Baxter: “What do the generations owe each other? Everything and nothing, Jason Skipper’s beautifully plain-spoken novel tells us, as it invites us to watch its young protagonist learning his hardscrabble survival skills from a few amazingly unreliable mentors. Some human truths need to be presented without embellishment, and the central truth of Hustle is that we’re all on the edge of a cliff. This is a fine story, honestly told.”

Artsmith Volunteer Jennifer Brennock said, “I’m always surprised by what writers bring to the open mic of each salon. You never know what people are working on in woodstove cabins and live-aboards. It’s fun to see that work come to light. It’s a very supportive environment.”

The event is free, an open forum, and attendees are encouraged to bring a beverage of choice and a snack. For more information about Artsmith visit orcasartsmith.org.
