Robert Stayton - photoRobert Arthur Stayton will speak at the Parish Hall on Wednesday, April 22 at 5 p.m. about a change that’s coming that will set human civilization on a new course for the future as he traces the history and evolution of energy from fire to fossil fuels and the ever-increasing pollution from their unintended consequences.

His book, Power Shift, enumerates the choices we have to shift away from fossil fuels, advocating his preference for solar-based energy. The good news, he tells us, is that this safe and environmentally conscious change can be accomplished without legislation and is available at the level of individuals and institutions. Stayton describes the process of how “we the people,” by taking direct action now, can make this vital switch while politicians dither and our leaders fiddle and fossil fuel continues to burn.

Stayton speaks with authority and experience. He tells how, in 1997, he and his wife converted their home, car, lawn mower and everything they own that uses fossil fuels to permanent solar power, speaking expertly by virtue of his education as a physics instructor, and deep research on the subject of energy, as well as from his direct experience of installing and using solar power for almost a decade.

Power Shift: From Fossil Energy to Dynamic Solar Power is a well-written, intelligent, scientific, and very interesting history and evolution of mankind’s brilliance, resourcefulness and ingenuity by using his ‘grand brain’ to harvest the resources of Mother Earth to create ‘energy’ from fire to fossil fuels. He continues with an explanation of how this has now reached a point of diminishing returns as the result of unexpected and unintended consequence that are offsetting many of the Earth’s natural systems and greatly affecting the lives of humankind and many life forms.

The good news is that in the arena of renewable energy sources the sun looms as the probable best choice as the supply of sunlight is endless. The author presents very interesting and valid data why this is so, and makes a fine case for the use of PV Panels and the switch to solar power. The author points out that ‘we the people’ can make the choice to switch our homes and businesses to solar power – one at a time – or in groups or communities as we see fit – and can accomplish this switch without waiting for legislation while our politicians continue to speak in ambiguous terms about the reality of this dire situation. Power Shift gives you hope for a positive future.
