Friday, January 11, 7 p.m., Black Box Theatre
— from Bethany Marie for Orcas Center —
The Black Box Theatre is where Orcas Center showcases edgier, experimental artists and forms, and 2020 kicks off with an “Off-Center” music event featuring three live music acts and wrapping up with a DJ set on Friday, January 11 starting at 7 p.m.
Headlining the event is San Francisco singer/songwriter John Thompson. Combining inventive musical textures, strong playing, and a haunting, evocative voice, John’s music evokes the early works of David Bowie and Neil Young. Supporting local acts include the incendiary song hammers of Ed Word (aka Matt Helms) the unbridled melodies and enthusiasm of Skeleton, aka Pedro Lopez and Kellen Comrie. Skeleton is an apocalypso rhythm-led ride through soaring tunes reminiscent of a memento mori. Led by singer-songwriter Pedro Lopez DeVictoria, Skeleton explores mortality and the fragile world around us.
After the sonic samplings of these three craftsmen, we will push our chairs and cares aside and dance to a 2 x 4 DJ set by locals Luka Palisæde (aka Stephen Fairweather) and Jake Perrine.
Tickets are $5 at the door. Venue is 15 and up. Bar available with ID.
