All islanders are invited to enjoy “The Prom You Never Had” on Friday evening, July 10, 2009, to benefit John Baker.
Baker, who has lived on Orcas for nearly two decades, has performed in many local plays and had also performed in Las Vegas. As an artist, he has had several shows on the island. Most recently, he worked at Orcas Island Ace Hardware until this year.
Earlier this spring, John was diagnosed with multiple cancers. For the last month he has been staying with his family in Portland, and it is rumored he may be able to come to Orcas for the Prom.
“The Prom You Never Had” was the idea of Gordon Koenig, owner of Gordeaux’s fine clothing shop behind Ecotopian Restaurant in Eastsound . “There’s seldom an opportunity to dress up on Orcas – so why not for an adult prom perhaps one never had….and the proceeds benefit a great guy – John Baker,” commented Karen Key Speck, band member of Orcatrazz Swing Band.
Orcatrazz will be performing the music for the Prom, under the direction of Ken Speck. Beth Baker, renowned island vocalist and Baker’s best friend, will sing several numbers at the Prom.
There will also be items for bid in a silent auction including four tickets to “Imagine,” the Orcas Center gala next weekend, sailing cruises aboard Tony Lee’s boat, the Morning Star, and artwork.
The Prom will begin at 8 p.m. at the Discovery House, below the Moran Mansion at Rosario. Tickets are $20 per person and include dessert and one beverage. Tickets at sold at Darville’s Book Store, Ace Hardware, and Gordeaux’s.
For further information or to help support the event, contact Koenig at 376-4673.

What a wonderful evening! Thanks to all who created this beautiful venue to celebrate what makes Orcas really special…how we care for and about people who live here. There was a great turnout and John’s resources will increase from all the generosity and good will present in The Discovery House. Well done!
