Thursday, June 2 and Sunday, June 5, 7 p.m., the Grange

— from Doug Bechtel —

Coming up in September is a full production of Listening Glass by Seattle playwright Jerome Vernich. This will be a world-premier, fully-staged production of a murder mystery.

In Listening Glass, the audience is taking a tour of the Maricopa County Major Crimes Unit which is in the middle of a murder investigation. During the tour, the audience will have the opportunity to watch as one of the detectives interviews someone who might know something about the murder.

While the play, as written, has major roles for two men and smaller roles for two women, the playwright is open to other gender casting alternatives.  The ages of the characters are open.

The characters (as written):
DETECTIVE KNAPP: A seasoned detective. Normally patient and steady, the character is now at the end of a 13 hour shift—rumpled and exhausted.

JAMIE BENNETT: A man or woman in their 20s. The character is afflicted by the early stages of schizophrenia. Symptoms include distractibility, uneven speech patterns, and a nervous habit.

OFFICER GRANT: A man or woman in a police officer uniform. An ambitious, no-nonsense cop, now doing overtime office work.

ANNETTE DAWSON: A man or woman. The front desk administrator at the police station.

There are also several roles that will be recorded (some sound only and some video taped) for playback during the performance.

Rehearsals will begin in mid June with two rehearsals a week increasing to four rehearsals a week in August leading to seven performances between September 2 and September 18.

Auditions will be held at the Grange at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 2 and Sunday, June 5.  A copy of the script is available at the Library counter.
