Orcas Horns & Nouveau Stride with Lorraine Feather & Stephanie Trick

Two nights only! Friday & Saturday, October 7 & 8 at 7:30 pm

Orcas Horns is a great example of the amazing things that can grow out of the small, horseshoe-shaped rock that is Orcas Island.  The band members represent a remarkable assemblage of homegrown musicians, many with professional roots as studio musicians and recording artists in Los Angeles, Seattle, and beyond. With band leader Steve Alboucq on trumpet and Martin Lund on piano and woodwinds, the Orcas Horns includes Orcas residents Gene Nery (guitar and vocals), Tony Morales (drums), Bruce Russell (bass guitar), Greg Books (baritone sax), Dimitri Stankevich (valve trombone), and Craig Canine (trumpet).

Recently headlined at the San Juan County Fair as well as The San Juan Community Theater, Orcas Horns has put together a varied program for the Orcas Center show never before performed on Orcas. Four pieces on the program are original compositions written by local musicians, including two by band member Lund, one by Orcas resident Jim Connell, and one by Alboucq. As a special treat for this concert, the Horns will be joined by two guest musicians: Jeff Busch, the Latin percussionist who last appeared at Orcas Center in the 2011 One World Festival, and Jon Goforth, one of the country’s leading commercial recording artists, on tenor saxophone.

The band will perform at least one number together with the evening’s other top billing, nationally renowned jazz vocalist Lorraine Feather and the young stride piano sensation Stephanie Trick.

Lyricist/jazz singer Lorraine Feather is a San Juan Islander who moved to Orcas four years ago with her husband (and Orcas Horns band member), Tony Morales, and their two dogs.  Lorraine has earned seven Emmy nominations as a lyricist and in 2011 was a Grammy nominee in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for her CD Ages.  Stephanie Trick is a young St. Louis-based pianist who specializes in the intricate, high-energy jazz style known as “stride” and is a rising star in the stride world, appearing at traditional jazz festivals all over the country and in Europe.

The two women first connected through a musician friend who knew that Lorraine had done a critically-acclaimed album of stride pieces with her own new lyrics. Lorraine and Stephanie exchanged albums, became mutual fans, and subsequently met to try out some musical ideas. They hit it off, and decided to form a performing and recording unit called Nouveau Stride. Their set is made up of wild and frequently hilarious lyrical treatments of blazing-hot classic jazz pieces by Fats Waller, James P. Johnson and Duke Ellington.

This split bill of music, supported by San Juan Propane and San Juan County Lodging Tax Fund, is not to be missed!

Tickets are $25, $17 (Orcas Center members), $11 (students) and may be purchased on the website or by calling  376-2281 ext. 1 or by visiting the Orcas Center box office, open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon- 4 pm.
