From the San Juan County Land Bank
Did you know Presidents’ Day is the Pacific Northwest’s traditional day to prune roses for optimum health and bloom in the coming year?
San Juan Islands’ Master Gardeners invite all rose gardeners to a rose pruning demonstration on Monday, February 21st from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Land Bank offices, located on the corner of Caines & Argyle streets in Friday Harbor.
Former SJ Island resident Nancy Wampler, a 2003 graduate of the WSU-Ext. Master Gardener training program, will present this free rose pruning demonstration. Nancy currently works as a rose care specialist, and is a member of the Tri Valley Rose Society. Nancy is also available for private, fee based garden consulting. She can be reached at 360-755-3682 to schedule an appointment.
Becky Kilpatrick, owner of the grounds and building which house the Land Bank administrative offices, is pleased about this opportunity to learn more about the heritage climbing and shrub roses which line the white picket fence of this historical property. Later in the spring, the outcome of this rose renovation will be on display for the many islanders who walk or drive by this busy corner every day. Smell the roses, indeed. Local WSU Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand the day of the event with rose care information and resources for rose enthusiasts to use in their own gardens.
This free demonstration is scheduled to allow rose lovers from Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw islands to attend. Call Judy Cumming at the Land Bank, 378-4402 for further information, or for rides to and from the ferry dock.
