“Introduction to Chinese Poetics and the Art of Translation” will be presented by John Friedmann at this months Writers Roundtable.

Chinese poetry of the classical period is revelatory when rendered in excellent translation. In his presentation, John will both talk about the special challenges of rendering Chinese poetry into English and read a selection of poems from recent translations by David Hinton and David Young. We will range from earliest (and utterly amazing) poems dating back to the 3rd century BCE to the 9th century CE, with a large selection of the poetry of Du Fu (712-770CE).

John Friedmann has presented many stimulating sessions at the Writers Roundtable, including his translations of poets such as Pablo Neruda and Rainer Maria Rilke. His great depth of experience with the poetry of many cultures will inform and enlighten, through readings and conversation.

All are welcome!
