Tina Brown shares her new Dècoupage Creation “Lost” and “Found” which she had dedicated to her father, Tony Brown, whose love of the wilderness continues to inspire her subject choices.
The process for these woodpecker pieces began by gluing down colored triangles (the discards from my Accordion Cards) onto a piece of wax paper the size of my final image, thus creating “new paper.” Next, I sketched my image onto kraft paper (it’s hardy enough to handle all the erasing that inevitably happens!) trying to get the proper balance of positive/negative and line/curve.
I find it hard to see this until the image is at full scale. The image is then transferred to tracing paper to start the nail-biting art of cutting! Though the Exacto knife is my tool of choice … it is VERY unforgiving if one makes an errant slice. Once cleanly released from the layers of glued triangles, I can peel off the wax paper backing and glue my images onto the fabric covered boards … a positive and a negative. What comes next is many, many layers of spray lacquer. Not only does this saturate the paper and give the colors more “punch” but it also seals the image to the fabric and strongly protects it.
Tina’s new work will be on display throughout the month of November at the Artworks in Olga.
