Sunday, August 19, 4 – 6 p.m., Senior Center
— from Cindy Wolf for Orcas Women’s Coalition —
We now have confirmation that we will be joined at our meeting this Sunday by:
- Cecily Hazelrigg-Hernandez – She won advancement to the general election for Judge, Court of Appeals, District 3
- Carolyn Jewett – Candidate for Judge, San Juan County District Court
- Debra Lekanoff – She won the Primary and will advance to the general election as the only Democratic candidate for 40th LD Representative to the Legislature in Olympia
Come meet the candidates, celebrate the women who made it through the Primary and talk about endorsements and campaign help in the November election. Getting talented women like these three elected to local and regional office is how we build the bench for equal representation at the State-wide and Federal level!
All women and trans-gender people are welcome. See you Sunday, 4-6 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center. If you like to celebrate with food and drinks, please bring some to share.

Wonderful news!!!! The Pink Wave is rising and will lift all boats! Join us on Sunday!
Congratulations!
For a couple of decades I have practiced law in the federal courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. While my practice is based in Manhattan, a short trip across the East River to Brooklyn and I find myself in the Eastern District of New York where it’s chief judge is a woman.
Likewise, the chief judge of the “mother court” of this country, the United States District Court of New York— the nation’s very first sitting court under our new Constitution and which was convened (even before the United States Supreme Court) on the second Tuesday in November of 1789, is a WOMAN, who succeeded another woman’s seven year term as Chief Judge.
In two decades appearing before both male and female federal judges, the thought that there might be any meaningful difference due to gender, whether in professionalism, aptitude or judicious wisdom, as between male and female judges has not once crossed my mind. That’s because they are chosen based on their abilities irrespective of their sex and the final outcome is that the gender simply (and really) doesn’t matter. If that’s the conclusion, which I assure you is shared by every other male colleague in the Bar with whom I’m acquainted, then statistically there should roughly be an equal amount of male and female Federal judges. We are NOT there yet! —but hopefully we’ll be there soon.
So, let’s celebrate milestones when they happen.
All should be equally elated with this progress.
