Evelyn Thurman and her Golden Honeybear (who won Safest Pet in 2009) wait in the shade for the 2012 Pet Parade to start

By Margie Doyle

The warmest, certainly the furriest, parade in Orcas Island’s parade-filled calendar is the annual Kaleidoscope Pet Parade, held today under bright skies.

Almost as many spectators as parade entrants filled North Beach Road today as the line-up of dogs, cats, chickens, goats, ponies and horses took to the streets, along with their people, and most made their way towards the Stage at the Village Green, where Fire Chief Kevin O’Brien, assisted by Kaleidoscope Director Amber Paulsen, gave out awards to the best in their class, be it Friendliest, Nicest Smile, Best behaved, Largest, Best fed, Owner look-alike or more. The awards are sponsored by island businesses.

Over 100 entrants made the annual march for the 22nd year as a fundraiser for Kaleidoscope Childcare Center.

Everyone's a winner at the Kaleidoscope Pet Parade. Here, Fire Chief Kevin O'Brien greets the Friendliest Pet Entries and their owners
