Monday, Feb. 1

Norm Stamper, author of Breaking Rank, and Jennifer Brennock read at Doe Bay Cafe’s Artsmith Salon, beginning at 7 p.m.  Stamper seved in law enforcement since 1966 and as chief of the Seattle Police Department for six years. Stamper has a doctorate in Leadership and Human Behavior and recently completed a novel. Assistant Director of Artsmith, Jennifer Brennock is an M.F.A. candidate in Fiction at Goddard College. Brennock is an editor of the “Pitkin Review” literary journal and the founder of three writers’ groups. She teaches two creative writing classes, “Write like a Photographer” and “Fiction Gym.”

Community workshop on the development of a corridor management plan (CMP) for the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway. A CMP is created by communities along scenic byways to identify strategies for stewardship, protection, and enhancement of the byway’s unique qualities. 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. at Senior Center.

Thursday, Feb. 4

Eastsound Planning Review Committee 3 to 5 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center. Review of 2010 Work Plan to be presented to the County Council on Feb. 8 and final hearing for the Country Corner LAMIRD.

Friday, Feb. 5

National Endowment for Humanities “Picturing America,” 40 panels of American art.. The exhibit is sponsored by the Palettes and an all-island reception will be held  from 5.30 to 7 pm featuring local experts to talk about and answer questions about the work.

Crossroads spring lecture series begins at 7:30 pm at the Orcas Center with Dr. Frank James presentation “Life in a Time of Pandemics: Influenza and Other Diseases that Shape Our Future.” Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Darvill’s Bookstore and the Library. A limited number of complimentary tickets are made available in advance through the Library and Senior Center.

Saturday, Feb. 6

Orcas Idol Finale begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. Tickets are $20 adult at Radio Shack and Darvill’s Bookstore. Nine finalists compete for the title “Orcas Idol 2010.” Sponsored by the Orcas Island Prevention Partnership, a Community Coalition.

Sunday, Feb. 7

Orcas Island Rowing Associations’  Indoor Rowing Fest “erg” race at the Odd Fellows Hall at 2 p.m. An erg is a rowing machine rowers use for training on land. Contact martin@ednagallery.com
