On a chilly March afternoon, OPAL Community Land Trust threw open the doors to their 2-bedroom and 4-bedroom houses at Wild Rose Meadow, just off Mt. Baker Road.
Brownies, cookies and apple juice were available for visitors to the Open House from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 6. OPAL Executive Director Lisa Buyers and Wild Rose Meadow project manager Justin Paulsen were on hand to greet the crowds of interested islanders who streamed through both building models.
Some of the “green” features incorporated in the 10 smaller homes and eight 4-bedroom homes are:
1) passive solar orientation
2) insulation exceeding code requirements
3) metal roofing and cement-board siding
4) engineered-finish wood floor and wool carpeting
5) post-formed counter tops
6) radiant electric heat
7) conduit for future solar/alternative power’
8) “energy Detective” to monitor power usage.
The project benefits from its siting near a well that produces 40 gallons per minute.
There is one two-bedroom home still available to qualified buyers at $150,000. Phase II of the building project will construct 2- and 4- bedroom homes to the southwest of the current homes. Eligible incomes range from $24,000 to $60,000/year; monthly payments rnage from $730 to $1300.
