— from Tracie Merrill for the Whale Museum —
The Whale Museum is joining forces with the Reardan FFA Agricultural Issues Team to host a “Southern Resident Killer Whale Recovery” Student Presentation on March 31 entitled “Is Washington Doing Enough to Save Puget Sound’s Southern Resident Killer Whales?”
The presentation will take place on March 31 at 6 p.m. at The Whale Museum. The Agricultural Issues Forum is an FFA Leadership Development Event that requires students to research an agricultural or natural resources issue and equitably present both sides of the issue.
As part of the requirement for state level competition, teams are required to build a portfolio of public presentations; this is where San Juan and area residents come in. The Reardan FFA Chapter Agricultural Issues team has developed a presentation about the plight of Southern Resident Killer Whales in and around Washington State.
The students make arguments integral to the recommendations set forth by the Southern Resident Killer Whale Task Force appointed by Governor Inslee and make arguments on both sides of this complex issue. Much of the argument centers on northwest salmon recovery efforts. The presentation is about 15 minutes long and afterwards, we ask that you question the students about the content of their presentation to test their depth of knowledge and soundness of their arguments as well as share islanders’ perspective on the issue.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (360) 378-4710 ext. 30 or emailinfo@whalemuseum.org. The Whale Museum is located in Friday Harbor at 62 First St. N. The Whale Museum can be found online at www.whalemuseum.org.

Many groups are working on this. I’m hoping that they are not keeping their information to themselves and working
in a vacuum. We heard at two of the talks about the San Juans and Killer whales last week that there needs to be more sharing to get to that major consensus and really be informed…Kudos to this forum and participants for taking this extremely important subject further down the road.
