— from Jacob Heinen for San Juan County Public Works —

We’re beginning to wrap things up at the intersection of West Beach and Enchanted Forest Road. Last week we completed 100% of the MSE wall, backfilled against the wall, and prepared for utility installations.

This week was focused on stormwater improvements and utilities. The contractor placed three catch basins and 15” drain pipe connecting the structures. Utility providers removed overhead power lines and conduit was laid from the intersection through the MSE wall to southern area of the project.

Guardrails will be installed next Tuesday and Wednesday. Following that our work will be focused on buttoning up the site. The embankments against the MSE wall will receive final grading, then topsoil and straw will be placed on the impacted slopes in preparation for plantings.

Despite excavating throughout a rainy September and adapting to minor design changes the project is on schedule to be completed by mid-November, stay tuned for an exact date. Thanks to OPALCO, Rock Island, CenturyLink, and Schrock Construction for their work this week.

Local businesses remain open with normal hours through construction. Orcas Island Pottery may be accessed via West Beach Road; both Beach Haven and West Beach Resort can be accessed via Enchanted Forest Road.
