Hello Orcas Island, since November 2023 I have been leading a silent meditation at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Wednesdays from 12-1 pm for the purpose of holding in our hearts the people of war-torn countries, such as Gaza, Ukraine, and South Sudan. It is unstructured and gives one the opportunity to silence oneself and focus on our fellow human beings who are suffering due to violence and war. Yes, you can do this at home or on Crescent Beach, but there is added energy when you are with others doing the same thing.
Several weeks ago, letter-writing was added from 1 to 2 pm in Benson Hall next to the church to senators and representatives (or anyone else) to make one’s thoughts known, to thank them for positions and actions they have taken that align with one’s values, or to urge them to act. Paper, pens, envelopes, and stamps are provided.
The two events are not connected, although they both can have a positive affect on the sense of despair many of us feel during these times. If you’d like to join the meditation, come at 12 pm. If you’d like to exercise your freedom of speech by writing a letter, come at 1 pm. You are welcome at both.
