Monday, January 20, 12-4 p.m., Eastsound Fire Hall

— from Hilary Canty —

The Orcas Island Community Foundation and Orcas Island Fire Department are offering a Day of Service program in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 20 from noon-4 at the Eastsound Fire Hall. The community is invited to come to the Fire Hall and pick a community project to work on.

So far, the Funhouse, Friends of Moran, the School District, and Children’s House have projects ranging from clean up to roof repair. There will also be a beach and road side clean up. Volunteers can contribute as little or as much time as they see fit. For a complete list of opportunities, go to www.oicf.us. If your organization has a project to add to the list, please contact the Orcas Island Community Foundation, 376-6423.

Orcas Island Fire and Rescue will be providing free CPR training throughout the event. This will be a half-hour training focused on developing your comfort and skills with the new CPR protocols. We would love to train 100 people on the 20th. It is an ambitious goal, but we are a remarkable community! Help us make it happen. Working together, our community grows stronger and healthier!

Meet at the Eastsound Fire Hall between 12-4 pm on Monday and select from many great service opportunities that will be occurring on this day or go directly to one of these projects:

  • Fire Department: Get trained in CPR. We will be training folks in the new hands only CPR. Lessons start every 1/2 hour and are super fast. Help us train 100 islanders on Monday!
  • Funhouse/Commons: Cleaning inside windows/raking outside. Bring work gloves.
  • Friends of Moran: move bunk beds to Camp Moran ELC. Bring flathead screw drivers, 1/2 inch six sided socket and hex drives.
  • Children’s House: Brush and limb removal or roof repair for playground structures. Bring truck, chainsaw, rakes, bow saw; roof repair would require advance look.
  • Public School: general grounds clean-up. Bring rakes and gloves.
  • Crescent Beach: garbage removal. Bring gloves.
  • Eastsound: garbage removal. Bring gloves.
  • KWIAHT: Clear ground for heritage-and seedling-variety apple and pear orchard for students to plant and graft in spring, and harvest for community use in future. Bring work gloves and a spare garden spade or fork if convenient. (Pending approval from OISD.)
  • Orcas Island Historical Museum: plant bulbs at Museum. Bring shovels, racks, towels.
  • OPAL Community Land Trust: Community Garden clean up at the Reddick Apartments and Offices. Help us clear out blackberries, lay down wood chips and spruce up the edges. Bring pruners, shovels, work gloves.
