“Voices of Darfur” will be heard Thursday evening, March 26 at the Orcas Island Community Church at 6:30 p.m. The program is part of Orcas Island student Maddy Smith’s senior project.
The Thursday night event will inclue a presentation about the current state of Darfur using stories, music, and images, followed by a showing of “Sand and Sorrow,” a documentary narrated by George Clooney.
“Voices of Darfur” will be performed by students from Orcas Island High School with a music presentation by the High School’s Tri-M music society .
“I have been working with an organization called STAND (www.standnow.org) to start a chapter here on Orcas Island,” Smith says.
“Just last week, retired Air Force general J. Scott Gration was appointed by President Obama as the US special envoy to Sudan. This is remarkable progress seeing as the Sudanese Government just recently kicked 16 humanitarian groups out of Darfur, leaving 1 million Darfuris without food, water, or medical aid.”
(Due to the harsh realities of genocide, parental discretion is highly advised.)
There will be no cost for admission, however donations are welcome and will be donated to genocide intervention. Smith invites the public to attend the event, saying, “Please join us in an effort to put an end to the genocide going on right now in Darfur!”
