From the American Legion, Voyle B. Martin Post

The public is invited to share in our annual Veterans’ Day Ceremony on 11-11-2011. The Voyle B. Martin American Legion Post #93 will dedicate its just-completed Viet Nam Veterans Memorial. The sculpture, sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion (SAL unit) and created by local sculptor, Pete Welty, was recently installed at the post home, located at 793 Crescent Beach Drive. It stands adjacent to the Legion’s new flagpole.

This year’s event will be especially meaningful because, weather permitting, the Heritage Flight Museum in Bellingham will stage a fly-over of the Veterans’ Day service. Major General William Anders (Apollo 8 astronaut and an Orcas Islander) will be piloting one of the planes. His son, Greg Anders, a retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, will also be flying one of the planes.

The traditional Veterans Day ceremony will be held inside the Post, beginning at 11:11 a.m. The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) unit will dedicate the new memorial directly afterwards, and the fly-over will take place at approximately 11:45 a.m. Light refreshments, coffee, and cake will follow, provided by the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary.

We look forward to welcoming our friends and neighbors to this special event.
