Natalie Dessay as Violetta, "La Traviata" in Verdi's beloved opera

Verdi’s La Traviata streams from the Metropolitan Opera to Orcas Center on Sunday, April 15

French soprano Natalie Dessay, one of the world’s greatest singing actresses and the star of the Live in HD transmissions of La Fille du Régiment, La Sonnambula, and Lucia di Lammermoor, sings the iconic role of Violetta in one of the most beloved operas of all time.

Verdi’s opera, a timeless story of love and sacrifice, is one of the most popular in history and has never before been transmitted as part of the Live in HD series. The score features numerous famous compositions, including Violetta’s arias “Sempre libera” and “Addio del passato,” Germont’s aria “Di Provenza il mar,” and the famous drinking song from Act 1, “Libiamo nel’ieti calici.”

Willy Decker’s spectacular staging uses highly theatrical effects—including all-black costumes with a single red party dress for Violetta and an omnipresent clock ticking away the remaining hours of Violetta’s life—to tell the opera’s story.

Matthew Polenzani, who starred in the new production premiere of Decker’s staging, repeats his acclaimed performance as Alfredo, while Dmitri Hvorostovsky, one of the world’s most famous Verdi baritones, sings the role of Giorgio Germont.

Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads his fifth Live in HD transmissions of the season, following Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Don Giovanni, and the April 7 transmission of Manon.

Tickets are $15  $11 for students ($2 off for Orcas Center members) and may be purchased on the website or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center box office during box office hours which are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon- 4 pm.
