You are invited to the 27th Annual Orcas Center Gala & Auction, Saturday, July 20, 2013. Don’t miss it because it’s going to be the bee’s knees!
Put on your glad rags and join us at the Orcas Center as we transport you back in time to a Roaring Twenties Speakeasy. Don’t worry if your spats and best boa are at the cleaners – we’ll doll you up at the event. There will be a professionally run casino (play moola for fun and prizes), a tasty dinner by Christina, plenty of hooch, hot jazz for dancing, and fabulous auction items. Mingle with flappers, fly boys and maybe a few notorious gangsters – all for a nifty time and a swell cause.
The Place: Orcas Center
The Date: July 20, 2013
The Time: 5:00 pm Casino, Hors d’oeuvres, Cocktails, and Silent Auction.
Followed by Dinner and Live Auction, then end the night dancing to a Jazz Quintet.
Tickets for The Gala are $150 per person and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon – 4 pm. Great write-up Margie! But I have to admit I was a bit stunned at the ticket price of $150 per person! There is clearly a disconnect with the island community going on here. I would wager that not one working person on Orcas Island will be in attendance. Pretty sad.
This is the yearly fund raiser for the Orcas Center, mostly all other fund raising on Orcas have a ticket price of $150.00
We need to support the Orcas Center that is
offering so many different form of entertainment for such a small community.
There are many ways to ensure that an event is financially viable, however, when you set the price where nearly half the community is unable to afford the ticket, something is wrong. I think the Orcas Center may lose their way if they focus their fundraising efforts on the 1%. Sorry but I agree with Ken Wood.
As a business member of Orcas Center I agree with both Ken and Angelica. Not only do the high ticket prices of this and “mostly all other fund raising on Orcas” put an event out of reach of the majority of Islanders, it gives the appearance of an exclusive club. In addition the timing of such events, in this case 5:00 PM, excludes most working folks.
I am a Board Trustee for Orcas Center and wish to thank Pierrette for defending this ticket price. This is the Center’s major fundraiser for the year and financial success of the event helps keep performance ticket prices at levels that can be afforded by most Islanders. Orcas Center works hard to provide a variety of entertainment and keep itself available to everyone. Good attendance at the Gala and generous donations will help in this effort. I hope our friends will consider joining us at what promises to be a very fun event.
