A tsunami watch has been issued for coastal Washington and the Puget Sound area, as well as the Oregon and California coasts, British Columbia, and Alaska. The warning follows a confirmed earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 at 3:25 p.m. PST, 315 miles southwest of Bering Island, Komandorski, and 80 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, in Russia. A tsunami watch is issued when a tsunami may later impact the watch area. The watch may be upgraded to a warning or advisory or canceled based on updated information and analysis. Emergency management officials and the public should prepare to take action.
