The second running of the Orcas Island Triple Ripple Trail Festival will blast off at the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) at Moran State Park, just two weeks from now on Oct. 13-14.  Events include a four mile race around Mountain Lake and a 10-kilometer hill climb up Mt. Constitution on Saturday, and on Sunday, a 30K trail run that traverses all of the park’s most beautiful trails, as well as a Chi Running workshop and $5 kids race at the ELC.  Prizes will feature local delights like garlic, coffee, soap, bread and chocolates purchased from island businesses. Race organizers Jen Vollmer and Susannah Beck are expecting more than 75 runners from as far away as Vermont to attend.

“We wanted to create an event that encouraged running and fitness on the island– there aren’t that many races here, for having such a great trail system.  The response has been amazing.  As for people, we are expecting a lot of locals for the four miler. The 30K is a draw for people from a lot farther away, while the 10K climb is just kind of a crazy event that needs to exist and draws hill-lovers from all over,” said Beck, who designed the courses.  “And maybe there isn’t a lot of sense to running three races in two days, but it’s been a popular format in other parts of the country, and it gives you a great excuse to hang out with other runners on Orcas Island for a weekend.  With great food, live music and a kids’ race, there’s something for everyone.”

This year, the Triple Ripple is partnering with the Funhouse Commons (also the charity beneficiary of the race), and has been generously supported by the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce. A number of Chamber members have also provided great island discounts for visiting runners and their families.

The 4-Miler starts Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m. at Mountain Lake.  The 10K starts at the ELC at 3 p.m. also on Saturday, Oct. 13. The 30K starts at the ELC at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
