The Power of Song with Pete Seeger A vibrant musical film in which director Jim Brown documents the life of one of the greatest American singer/songwriters of the last century. 6:30 refreshments, 7:30 film @ Emmanuel Parish Hall in Eastsound. Pete Seeger was the architect of the folk revival, writing some of its best known songs including “Where Have all the Flowers Gone”, “Turn, Turn, Turn”, and “If I Had A Hammer.” Largely misunderstood and criticized for his strong beliefs, he was picketed, protested, blacklisted, and in spite of his enormous popularity, banned from commercial TV for more than 17 years. Key Club and Orcas Quilters Raffle to Benefit Jordan Griffin Orcas High School Key Club members will sell raffle tickets for a quilt donated by Orcas Quilters to benefit high school senior Jordan Griffin’s specialized ski equipment and other medical treatment needs. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Island Market.
Restoration work party at Orcas Island’s largest estuary, working with local landowners to restore the Cayou Valley Lagoon in Deer Harbor. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These work parties are open to the public and all ages are welcome! Sailing the NW Passage Ocean sailor, Jerry von Gohren, will do a visual presentation on his 2007 72-day voyage through the icy straights of northern Canada on the ship Cloud 9. The event is sponsored by the Orcas Island Historical Museum. 2:30 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center. Admission by donation.

SPLAB Literary Series at the Doe Bay Care This week’s featured author George Bowering. George is a poet/novelist from British Columbia. He was Canada’s first Parliamentary Poet Laureate, 2002-2004. His latest poetry book is My Darling Nellie Grey, a series of 12 chapbooks . His latest novel is billed as a memoir. Pin Boy is about the lovelife of a teenager who has to figure out what to do with three female persons, one being a highschool teacher. Fall 2010 saw a new edition of his anti-Western Caprice. Movie Night at Doe Bay Cafe Movie starts at 7:00pm, free popcorn at show time, half-priced bottles of wine. This week’s movie is a childhood favorite: “The Neverending Story.” Bastian Bux takes us into his fantasy created in the pages of his magical book. Come re-introduce yourself to the the strange and interesting characters that help Bastian cope with his troubled youth.
