Tom May, author-songwriter-performer, comes to the Orcas Senior Center on Sept. 24

Internationally known folksinger Tom May will appear on Orcas Island, Saturday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Senior Center, 62 Henry Road in Eastsound.

Tom May has been a full time folk artist for almost 40 years. Kicking off his career in grand style in the 1970s by opening a number of times for Gordon Lightfoot, and later for artists such as Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell, and many others, Tom has gone on to release an even dozen of his own albums.

In 1985 he began what came to be his nationally syndicated radio program “River City Folk,” still heard on over 100 stations each week and XM satellite radio.  Tom  was commissioned to write a book about the music business in 2007 for Routledge Publishers, New York; Promoting Your Music; The Lovin of the Game has been well received all over the world as a basic primer for aspiring musicians, and features interviews withGordon Lightfoot, other old friends of Tom’s, and music business gurus in recording and publishing.

Along his musical journey, he has performed with full symphony orchestras accompanying his original compositions about the west; represented the U.S. with his music at opening ceremonies at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002; and shared his songs,  from Alaska and the Yukon in Canada, across North America, to Ireland, and to many European countries. Tom also founded and  produces “Winterfolk”, Portland, Oregon’s largest annual folk music event, a benefit of Sisters of the Road café. He still tours extensively, and continues to perform at  major festivals, coffeehouses, and clubs. Tom’s songs feature history, wine, romance and stories of folks that he has met along the way, all performed with his resonant baritone voice and expressive guitar arrangements.
