The current Congress continues to threaten Medicaid and Medicare and it is vital to look to the future and opportunities for change.
Growing Costs of U.S. Health Care Corporate Power vs. Human Rights Is Reform Finally Within Reach by John Geyman, M.D. traces the history of health care in the U.S. over the last 60 years. The book describes failed reform attempts and how corporate profiteering and privatization are increasing problems.
Geyman supports not-for-profit national health insurance, as demonstrated by all other high income countries, paid for by progressive taxation based on income, and outlines the benefits for patients, physicians and hospitals.
John Geyman is professor emeritus of family medicine at the University of Washington, served over 21 years in academic medicine and teaching and practiced in rural communities including Friday Harbor. Since 1990 he has been involved in research on U. S. health care policy. The book is available at Darvill’s Bookstore in Eastsound and Griffin Bay Bookstore in Friday Harbor.

I am sure this book is a valuable addition to the mountain of evidence that the Illness Industry is making grotesque profits from the immiseration of Americans. Like most reasonable people, I already agree with Dr. Geyman’s conclusion that we need single payer national health care, just like every wealthy country in the world already has.
“People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food.”
― Wendell Berry
