— Linda Slone for Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival —

Think you don’t like classical music? You will have three very affordable opportunities (four, if you’re old enough) to discover it just might be OK. Come hear the internationally renowned Miró Quartet in unusual settings on and around Orcas next week, while the four string players spend a few days as Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival’s Quartet-in-Residence.

On Monday, October 9, the quartet performs while the audience dines at Random Howse. The music begins at 6:30 and there is no cover charge. For reservations, call Random Howse at 360-376-1111.

The Miró Quartet plays a fun evening Community Concert on Thursday, October 12, at the Orcas Island Grange. The performance begins at 7 p.m. and is followed by a reception, where you can meet the performers. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 and younger, and are available by cash or check at Darvill’s Bookstore.

On the morning of Friday, October 13, the Inter-Island ferry is the setting for the quartet’s performance. The string players board the 10:35 a.m. ferry and entertain island commuters and tourists while the boat travels through the islands.

And for the “mature” audience, Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival and Orcas Senior Center present a free afternoon concert for all Orcas Island seniors on Tuesday, October 10, at the Orcas Senior Center. The concert begins at 2 p.m. and is followed by a reception.

Quartet members Daniel Ching, William Fedkenheuer, John Largess, and Joshua Gindele have won several prestigious awards, both as an ensemble and as solo performers, and recently played to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall, their eighth appearance at the New York concert hall. The Miró Quartet is the Faculty String Quartet-in-Residence at the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin.

This week of exciting Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival events is generously underwritten by the Valerie and William Anders Foundation and kind patrons like you.
