Wednesday, October 31 HALLOWE’EN!

Trick-or-treat for a book at the Public Library from 4 to 7 p.m. Kids and parents are invited to stop by the meeting room at the Orcas Island Public Library for a chance to show off their Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat for a book. Come in and pick out a book and have your picture taken. Books are made possible through a generous grant from Friends of the Orcas Island Library. Trick or Treating in Eastsound businesses, beginning at 4 p.m.

Annual Family Carnival at Orcas Island Community Church, an island tradition since 1992. From 5 to 7 p.m. Open to the whole community, this is a fun evening for kids of all ages and includes a Bouncy Castle, and carnival games (cakewalk, bean bag toss, balloon dart throw, putt-putt golf, famous fishing game and more) plus face painting! Everybody wins prizes and there will be food and lots of candy for the trick-or-treaters.360-376-6422

Monster movie and dance at Odd Fellows Hall Movie: “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” 7 p.m. Odd Fellows Hall, free. Annual Halloween Dance, 8:30 p.m. – midnight, Odd Fellows Hall, $10 for adults, $5 for kids. Music will be by Tiempo de Lopez and there will be prizes for best costume.

Thursday Nov. 1

Eastsound Planning Review Committee from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall. County Advisory Committee to review plans for development in Eastsound, including the Stormwater Treatment Plant, Prune Alley Streetscape Designs and Land Usage and development.

Bingo! to benefit Kaleidoscope at American Legion. The Sons of The American Legion are sponsoring BINGO for Kaleidoscope Childcare Center. 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall. 50 cents/game. Split the Pot winnings. Concessions available. Come check it out!

Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens streamed live from London. 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. The Frost Giants at the Doe Bay Café! A 5-piece American rock and roll band based in Seattle. Mixing Willie Nelson’s country with T. Rex’s burn with Francoise Hardy’s plaintiveness, The Frost Giants include the female-male vocal tandem of Karen Ancheta (mandolin) and Bill Malatinsky (acoustic guitar, trumpet), and the classically-trained, multi-instrumental power trio Andy Juechter (keyboards, organ), Brad Halm (electric lead), and Colin McCrate (drums). Saturday Nov. 3

Healing Arts Center Fall Fair. This fundraiser, offered twice a year, lets clients try out the practitioners’ services  in many styles of massage and bodywork, acupuncture, and more at a greatly discounted rate.  New this year are Vocal Freedom or Sound Healing sessions with Khadoma Colomby. The rates are $45/hour or less, and some services are offered by the half-hour at $25. Several practitioners are also offering coupons, which may be redeemed at other times during November. All funds raised from the Fairs go to the nonprofit organization, and support the historic Eastsound building. This allows practitioners to keep their rates as low as possible throughout the year. Sessions fill up early, so call the Healing Arts Center at 376-4002, or stop by 453 North Beach Road between 9 and 3, Monday through Friday, and reserve an appointment or two.

Public Hearing on “Scoping” for the Cherry Point Coal Terminal — US Army Corps of Engineers, Whatcom County and Dept of Ecology, the lead agencies in charge of granting permits for the project,hear public input.12-3 p.m. at Friday Harbor High School.

Orcas Crossroads Lecture Series “Lessons from the Oldest Old” with Claudia Kawas, MD. Dr. Kawas oversees “The 90+ Study” of the oldest-old, the fastest growing age group in the United States. Learn how to age well. Come with your questions and thoughts for the Q & A session, and enjoy the reception following the presentation. Tickets are $10 and available at Darvill’s Bookstore, online at www.orcascrossroads.org, or at the door. Some complimentary tickets are available in advance at the Senior Center.
