Orcas Fly-In Each year 100-150 aircraft attend the Orcas Fly-In from around the country. Under the variety of old-fashioned airplanes, seaplanes, “warbirds” and experimental aircraft, pilots relax, camping underneath or near the wings of their aircraft and are there to answer any questions about their aircraft. Orcas Artists Studio Tour Reception, Tour 35 Orcas Artists’ Studios Aug. 17 and 18 and come to the Opening Reception at the Orcas Center Lobby and Madrona Room from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Hidden Costs of the Coal Economy, Dr. Claudia Oakes, an environmental consultant and faculty member of Montana State University , 5-6:30 pm, Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Eastsound. Dr. Oakes will speak about Montana’s political and environmental positions in the coal economy.

Car Show
from 10 am – 3 pm at Airport Park. Featuring cars-trucks-motorcycles-specials. $10 donations for entrants to benefit the Orcas Island Food Bank & the Orcas Island Booster Club.

Free Composting Workshop on San Juan Island, 11 am to 2 pm, San Juan County Fairgrounds. Learn how to build a 3-bin composting system. Sponsored by San Juan County Public Works Waste Management.

Café Musica! A musical afternoon with Esther & Isaac Olson from 1 to 3 p.m. at Darvill’s Bookstore.

“Old Fashioned Chicken Dinner” from 5 to  8 p.m. at the Eastsound fire hall. Dinner will include choice of baked or barbeque chicken, cornbread, corn on the cob, salad, dessert, lemonade and coffee. Dinner will be offered for $15 for adults and $8 for 12 years old and under. All profits will go directly to the 911 monument project.

Mt. Baker Volcano Monthly lecture at the Summit Learning Center on Mt. Constitution in Moran State Park at 4 p.m. by Doug McKeever of the Mt. Baker Volcano Research Center in Bellingham WA (WWU).  Admission by donation.

“Kinship with the Sidhe: Exploring our links with the Faerie Otherworlds”at Camp Indralaya from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch break will be two hours, from 12:30 – 2:30. Grace McCune plays at Music in the Park, from 5 pm – 7 pm at Eastsound Village Green. Pack a picnic, bring your friends, and listen  McCune will be joined by violinist Joel Gamble, Andrew Moore on drums, Armando Nunes on bass and guitarist Bruce Harvie.
