KindlingsFest Continues at Community Church Today and Tomorrow. KindlingsFest is a celebration of Art & Ideas where they intersect with the spiritual.  Morning lecture, conversations with artists in residence and BagEnd Café in the evenings.The Kindlings is a relational, intergenerational movement whose mission is to rekindle the spiritual, intellectual and creative legacy of Christians in culture. The Kindlings welcomes people to participate in our events regardless of their religious affiliation.

“Trying” on stage at the Grange The Actors Theater presents Fred Whitridge & Cara Russell in a fully staged reading of the play “Trying” by Johanna McClelland Glass. This touching, sweet and ultimately uplifting play takes place when a young woman comes to work for an aged aristocrat, Judge Francis Biddle – a former Attorney General of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt. The play takes place during the late 1960s as they “try” to understand each other. Directed by Doug Bechtel.  Tickets for all performances are $10 and are available at Darvills Bookstore and on-line at www.orcasactors.com . The Tree Ring Live Music at Doe Bay Cafe at 7:30pm. They are a new project from San Diego folk artist Joel P West that wanders from a traditional song craft centered on vocal melodies, finding its strengths instead in the poignant composition of voices and instruments. Thoughtfully crafted lyrics that highlight the natural world are interwoven with a carefully-constructed palette of chamber instruments.   Call 376-8059 for reservations.

“Larry Crowne” on-screen at the Seaview Theater Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he’s worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot, who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. Tosca: The Met on-screen at Orcas Center The Met: Live in HD 2011 Summer Encore Series continues with “Tosca.” Luc Bondy’s controversial and Avant-garde production of Puccini’s operatic thriller, which Le Monde called “a perfect night at the opera,” stars Karita Mattila in the title role. Marcelo Álvarez is her lover, the painter Cavaradossi, and George Gagnidze plays Scarpia, the sadistic chief of police who wants Tosca for himself. Joseph Colaneri conducts. Annual Kaleidoscope Yard Sale will be open from 9-1 on Saturday July 30th at 1292 North Beach Rd. Donations accepted at Kaleidoscope, no beds or electronics.

Ride the Zip Line at Camp Orkila YMCA Camp Orkila  invites the public to come out and take a ride on the new 1000 ft Zip Line!  By-appointment only, Community Zip days will be from 9 am to 10:30 am on the following Saturdays:  July 30th, August 6th, and August 13th. If interested, you must call camp to sign-up for a time assignment. Maximum weight capacity for a single rider is 285 lbs (subject to change depending on conditions) and children must be entering 3rd grade or older to participate. Being prompt is important so please plan to arrive at camp 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Please enter through the main entrance on Mount Baker Road and follow signs to the designated parking areas. Call 376-2678 to sign-up for a time.

Northwest Holistic Education Conference, Salmonberry School is hosting its third holistic education conference. The theme for this event will be how to develop natural learning relationships with young people to nurture growth and development at home and transform schools into places of healing. Keynote speakers this year, Ba Luvmour, Kirsten Olson and Josette Luvmour, are among the nation’s leading scholars educators and activists of holistic education.
