League of Women Voters Candidates Forum, moderated by Louise Carnachan, 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center. Candidates and proponents and opponents of ballot propositions will speak. Questions will be taken from the audience.

Artsmith Salon, 7:30 p.m. at Doe Bay Resort  Café Featured writers are followed by a writers’ open mic. All creative writing welcome. The salon is free to attend and the cafe will be open for dining.

Marine Lecture Series Begins at Camp Orkila at 7 p.m. Dr. Joe Gaydos of the SeaDoc Society will present a lecture, “The Western Grebe: a vanishing icon,” as the first in a series of marine lectures. Please park in the upper parking lot at Camp Orkila. Shuttle service from the parking lot to the talk is available before and after the lecture.

Wednesday, Oct. 14

Intermediate Birding: Over-Wintering Birds begins this week.  Taught by Kim Middleton at the Orcas Island Public Library, the class is offered twice each week; one meeting on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the other meeting on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call 376-4985 to register.

Deer Harbor Plan Review Committee will commence holding regular public meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, between 3:45 and 5:45 p.m. at the Deer Harbor Community Club, located at 4319 Deer Harbor Road, Orcas.

Thursday, Oct. 15

Great Expectations Opening Night at the Orcas Center.
Great Expectations will be performed Thursday-Saturday, October 15-17 and 22-24. All performances are at 7:30 pm EXCEPT for the final performance on Saturday, October 24, which is a 2 pm matinee.

The Islands Little League Board will conduct a public meeting on  at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria to hear everyone’s ideas and enlist help with the upcoming 2010 season. All are welcome to help include all grils and boys age 5-15. Help needed for  Managers, Coaches, Umpires, a Safety Officer, Treasurer and a regional Delegate, Field maintenance parties, Mariner Day trip chaperones, Registrars and schedulers, Tryouts coordinators and experienced barbeque technicians! Crossroads Lecture 2 p.m. James McGaugh, “Memory and Emotion: The Making of Lasting Memories” at the Orcas Center. Tickets at Darvill’s.  $10. A limited number of complimentary tickets will be made available before each lecture.
