Movie buffs and Hollywood lovers pulled out old prom dresses and tuxedos from the darkest corners of their closet for this event. The Orcas Center lobby was decked out with golden balloons, ball gowns, red carpet, and the paparazzi, as a modest crowd attended the live streaming of the Oscars on the main stage at the Orcas Center, on Sunday March 2nd.
With the Red Carpet starting at 4:30, and the Oscars Awards show beginning at 5:30, there was plenty of time to socialize and complement each other on how they can still manage to fit into that old tux or gown.
Zak Everly was ready to take your picture with a glaring flash, and Anita Orne and Gordon Koenig approached everyone who walked through the lobby doors, with their turned off microphones. “Who are you wearing?” they asked. Orne was decked out in one of the fancy gowns she is often seen wearing at Olga Symphony concerts.
The Madrona Room was complete with a bar, and plenty of tables to get comfortable and enjoy viewing the awards from another large screen. On the main stage, Grace McCune and Jake Perrine ‘hosted’ the event, and interviewed literally every member of the audience during the muted commercial breaks.
The audience enjoyed getting to dress up on this rainy Sunday, but the award speeches were what brought them out. Many commented on the touching speeches by best supporting actress winner, Lupita Nyong’o, of 12 Years a Slave, and Best Supporting Actor, Jared Leto, for his role as a transgender AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club.
A fun time was had, as everyone was in the spot light at the Orcas Center’s first annual Oscar party. Hold on to your prom dress; you might need it next year.

I had a great time! Let’s do it again!
Orcas Center really did themselves proud. A finer venue could not be found. It’s too bad the snowy weather dampened attendance. Those who did attend had a rousing good time. I hope Orcas Center does this again next year. It would be a great annual tradition.
