The Met: Summer Opera Series Debuts with "Madama Butterfly"

The Met: Live in HD 2011 Summer Encore Series debuts at Orcas Center with Puccini classic on July 1

Beginning July 1st, Orcas Center will present Summer HD Encores, a series of screenings from the award-winning Metropolitan Opera series Live in HD. The series begins with Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” on Friday July 1 at 7:30 pm.

Orcas Center’s new custom calibrated 24’ x 13’ projection screen and state-of- the-art projector and lens, will all be in place to bring audiences the richest of viewing experiences.

Patricia Racette sings the title role in the late Academy Award winning film director Anthony Minghella’s stunning production of Puccini’s tragedy, “Madama Butterfly,” a new classic of the Met repertory that opened in the 2006-07 season. Marcello Giordani is American Navy Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, and Dwayne Croft and Maria Zifchak co-star. Patrick Summers conducts. This Metropolitan Opera performance was originally transmitted live on March 7, 2009.

To clarify- The Met : Live in HD Summer Encore Series is not streamed live. The Encore Series is exactly that, the best of performances from past seasons. Orcas Center will be streaming live when the new Metropolitan Opera season begins in October 2011. However, the two satellites and electrics for live streaming are in place now. One can see them on the back roof of Orcas Center facing the coordinates for the future live streaming. Why two satellites, you may ask? There are two satellites so that Orcas Center always has a back up if one satellite is down, insuring Orcas Center audiences’ viewing pleasure is not interrupted.

Tickets for “Madama Butterfly” are $15 for adults and $11 for students. $2 off for Orcas Center members and may be purchased on the website or by calling 376-2281 ext 1 or visiting the Orcas Center box office during box office hours which are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12- 4 pm.
