Tuesdays Sept. 1 – Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Brickworks in Friday Harbor
The San Juan Islands Ag Guild is proud to present a cooperative film collection exploring the future of farming compiled by young farmer advocates, the Greenhorns!
The average age of farmers in the US is 57. Five years ago it was 55. In San Juan County it is 60. At this rate, who will our future farmers be?
In a series of compelling, independently produced documentaries, the work of young farmers is honored as we witness the trials and tribulations of farming in the modern world. Each beautiful film engages the viewer in questions of farmland access, rural livelihoods, and the relationships of people and place. As one farmer in the award winning film To Make a Farm put it, “Our job is based on a desire to create a better system for the environment and for people. Its pretty neat that your job can be your conviction at the same time.”
Like farming, film is also a labor of love and the telling of these heart-warming and often humorous stories helps us to celebrate, support and encourage the next generation of agrarians.
Up Up! Farm Film Festival – the future of farming will take place Tuesdays, Beginning Sept. 1 at the Brickworks, 150 Nichols Street in Friday Harbor [Note the current ferry schedule allows viewers from other islands to leave San Juan Island at 10 p.m.]
Tickets are $7 at the door / $35 season ticket. Popcorn & refreshments are available!

The mission of the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild is to foster a vibrant, resilient and sustainable local agriculture and food system in San Juan County, Washington.
The Greenhorns is a grassroots organization that works to support new farmers in America. Their work is unconventional and varied, with a focus on events such as, mixers, celebrations and workshops, as well as the production of media. They aim to retrofit the food system and build a thriving agricultural economy.
Brickworks, a project of the Ag Guild, continues to thrive as a buzzing hub for events and happenings. We are proud to be hosting the San Juan Island Farmers Market, Friday Art Market and regular education activities such as morning Qi Gong classes. The facility, complete with beautiful dance floor, plaza, commercial kitchen and new acoustic panels, is available for community gatherings.

Deep gratitude to all our farmers. A Spanish proverb reminds us just how important and fundamental food is to the fabric of our society.
“Lo que separa la civilización de la anarquía son solo siete comidas.”
(Civilization and anarchy are only seven meals apart.)
Funny this quote comes from a Spanish source. In “The Spanish Anarchists,” Murray Bookchin showed how civilization and anarchism, defined as direct democratic government by the people themselves, could coexist and even thrive together. But the fascist forces of the Franco faction, aided by Hitler’s bombers, put an end to that dream.
