The Funhouse is hosting its fourth annual “Get Off The Rock” College Counseling event. Scheduled throughout April and May, the event features top college prep and financial advisors from the Seattle area.

Whether students and their parents are thinking about college next year or four years from now, The Funhouse encourages all public school, Christian school, home-school, and Alternative Learning students, their parents, and others who may be interested, to attend.

Featured speakers and their presentation topics include:
Funding Your Student’s Education” Thursday, April 2nd at 6:30 PM at the Funhouse.

David Aramaki, Financial Advisor and Financial Education Specialist from Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. of Seattle will discuss financial aid strategies, tax issues affecting savings plans, college funding options and how they fit individual situations. David will help parents understand how investment decisions affect financial aid and taxes.

For families interested in learning more about financial planning for college, David Aramaki will also be available Thursday, April 2nd and again Friday, April 3rd from 8:30 AM to 1 PM for half-hour, individual advisory sessions.

These sessions will be held at The Funhouse and advanced reservations are required.

Let’s Go- College!” Wednesday, April 15th at 6:30 PM at the Orcas Public School Library.

Arlene Prince and Judy MacKenzie, Seattle college counseling consultants, will concentrate on current trends in college admission, high school curricular choices, standardized test performance, the application process, and tips on how to choose a college including visits and interview techniques. A concise, updated college notebook will be distributed prior to the meeting.

Thursday April 16th Arlene and Judy are offering half-hour individual consultations for students and/or parents at the Orcas Public School Library.  Students are urged to bring to the meetings unofficial high school transcripts and any standardized college entrance test results such as PSAT, PLAN, SAT, or ACT scores. The first session starts at 7:30 AM. The last session of the day will be scheduled for 3 PM.

Advance sign-ups for these sessions are required, with preference given to current Juniors.

College Essay Workshop” at the Funhouse Saturday May 16th and Sunday May 17th from 10 AM to 1 PM.
Sarah Callender, Seattle-based college essay consultant, will conduct a 2-day workshop for juniors, focusing on writing the college application essay. On Saturday, Sarah will provide instruction and inspiration to help students write essays that allow their voice, personality and unique attributes to shine.

On Sunday, students are encouraged to bring an outline or rough draft of an essay and review the draft with Sarah in small group sessions. Sarah is also available for two essay consults, via email, during the summer (no additional fee).

Students should come ready to brainstorm, armed with pen, paper and any interesting essay prompts for their colleges of choice.

Advance sign-ups for these sessions are required, with preference given to current Juniors.

The cost to participate is $50/all or $20/individual presentation for Funhouse Members, and $100/all or $35/individual presentation for Non-Members. As always, Funhouse scholarships are available and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

To ensure there are  adequate printed materials for each presentation, students and their parents/guardians are requested to reserve their space no later than March 27 for Aramaki sessions/presentation; April 3 for the Prince/MacKenzie sessions/presentation; and May 8 for the Callender essay workshop.  To make reservations, ask questions, request a scholarship for this event, e-mail Kate Hansen at kate@thefunhouse.org.
