||| FROM THE FOOD HEROES PROJECT of SAN JUAN MAKERS GUILD |||
Local food on island plates really is the basis of building the local food economy. One of the restaurants pioneering island grown ingredients on Orcas has been The Kitchen and this summer they are being awarded Food Heroes recognition. The Food Heroes project is a collaboration of the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild, The Conservation District, and the Makers Guild with the goal of highlighting leaders in the local food movement.
To celebrate The Kitchen and their years of feeding the community and visitors excellent local grown and Asian fusion foods, a special dinner is being held on August 5 in West Sound. Tickets for the country-style dinner (or donation-only contributions) are available online and the venue is the Yacht Club and Community Hall. Dinner is at 6 overlooking the sea, followed by music in the Community Hall featuring the incomparable Rafe Pearlman and friends.
Tickets and donations can be accessed at https://sanjuanmakersguild.com/thekitchen
Join us in honoring Charles and Jasmine for their gifts to our community – and to celebrate their forthcoming ventures as pop-up and catering purveyors of wonderful meals. Donations can be made online and do not require attending the dinner. Salmon and vegan options for dinner.

No one is more deserving of this than Charles and Jasmine. Though I don’t know Jasmine, I have known Charles for years – and I have had the great pleasure of tasting some of his catered food. I look forward to tasting what they do together and have done for years. (Low income person here, who doesn’t eat out much).
I’m so impressed and delighted that they are turning what became a nightmarish situation for The Kitchen, into a new and exciting venture! BRAVO!
Charles really shines as a caterer – my mouth is watering just thinking about this food which is bound to be delicious – I love the idea of pop-up catering!
Maybe there will also be more food trucks. I love seeing that catering truck at Orcas Landing, and Joanna’s food truck in town. It’s about time!
Good for you, Charles and Jasmine – Wishing you every success, and I’m certain you will do well! I look forward to tasting your food. I and so many others are in your corner – we’re behind you, and standing by to see what happens – and how we can help.
