Orcas relies on nonprofits to provide essential services. Food, housing and basic living support, arts and culture programming, senior services, early childhood education, and environmental stewardship are all provided through nonprofit organizations.
These programs are the heart of our community, keeping us healthy, engaged and connected.
In order to maintain their work, nonprofits rely on volunteer Boards to ensure good governance and sufficient financial resources to fulfill their missions. With over 100 organizations serving our community, we need a legion of skilled board members. If you are one of the many volunteers who fill these positions, thank you! Your service makes Orcas a better place for all.
If you are interested in learning more about the opportunity to serve, the Orcas Island Community Foundation is hosting an Introduction to Board Service workshop. The program is designed to outline the roles and responsibilities of board membership as well as the best way to find a good fit for service.
The session is on May 28th from 10-12 at the OICF office. Please contact Hilary Canty, 360-376-6423, to sign up. There is no charge for the program, thanks to OICF’s Cornerstone members who underwrite all OICF operations.
Earth Day is this Monday and there are a few great ways to celebrate over the weekend. The Great Island Clean Up is this Saturday. You can pick up garbage bags and pickers at the exchange and trash can be dropped off at the Village Green between 2 and 3. All volunteers are invited to end the day celebrating with a free pint at Island Hopping Brewery at 4. Contact Pete Moe with any questions.
Camp Orkila is having is hosting ROAR- Rogue Obstacle Adventure Race. There is a short course and long, and both include plenty of mud, dirt, crawling and climbing. Guaranteed dirty fun! All to support Camp Scholarships. Register here and bring a towel for the car ride home!
The Museum is hosting a celebration of island trees from 11-2. Learn more about historical orchards and interesting varietals. KWIAHT and the Master Gardeners will be on hand to teach about identification and preservation of our local treasures.
And no weekend is complete without the opportunity to strut! Orcas’s newest parade- the Procession of the Species- debuts on Saturday. Line up for at 10:30 at the Library and then the saunter through town starting at 11:30. There will be a host of activities throughout town as well, see schedule here.
