The Latin Grammy Award-winning Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet headlines Orcas Island Chamber Music
Festival’s opening weekend concerts on August 1 at 7:30pm and August 2 at 5:30pm, treating audiences to extraordinary tango music on the Orcas Center stage.

After the August 2 concert, the ensemble – comprised of Nicolas Danielson on violin, Javier Sanchez on
bandoneón, Jun Cho on piano, and Pedro Giraudo on bass – will also perform at OICMF’s Tango Afterparty, a salon of exquisitely passionate music starting at 9pm in the Black Box of Orcas Center.

Late-night afterparty attendees can relax in a speakeasy atmosphere with plenty of Argentinian flair as the New York-based quartet performs a setlist featuring Giraudo’s own innovative and complex nuevo tango compositions as well as his arrangements of the great nuevo tango masters from Osvaldo Pugliese to Astor Piazzolla.

For a dash of pre-party verve, guests are invited to a free mini tango lesson at 8:30pm in the Black Box with dance instructors Sara Thomsen and Jeff Steele. The lesson is geared to all ages and abilities, and attendees will have an opportunity to try out their new tango moves during the dance numbers slated for the latter half of the event.

The Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet represents the evolution of tango, from its roots in the traditional Orquesta
típica, to tango nuevo epitomized by Astor Piazzolla. The quartet has released three albums to date; the first, Vigor Tanguero, won a Latin Grammy in 2018. The second, Impulso Tanguero, released in 2021, continued to evolve the possibilities of tango, demonstrating how Giraudo’s contemporary tango style crosses over elegantly and seamlessly to the world of chamber music. In the most recent album, Strata (2024), Giraudo ventures into the world of symphonic music, crafting a rich sonic landscape that draws from his diverse musical influences.

Tickets to the 21-and-up Tango Afterparty are $20 and include a signature tropical cocktail or mocktail. This post-concert tango soirée is generously sponsored by Douglas Elwood and David Dotlich.
