“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” —Blanche DuBois, A Streetcar Named Desire

— from Artha Kass —

A Streetcar Named DesireGillian Anderson joins the roster of great actresses: Vivian Leigh, Cate Blanchet, Jessica Tandy, Rachel Weiz to inhabit the role of Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams’ classic, timeless, Pulitzer Prize winning, masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire which streams live from the Young Vic in London to Orcas Center on Thursday, September 25 at 7:30 pm.

With Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, Bleak House, The Fall) as Blanche DuBois, the magnetic Ben Foster (Lone Survivor, Kill Your Darlings) as Stanley and Vanessa Kirby (Great Expectations, Three Sisters) as Stella, sparks fly in this contemporary NT Live’s Young Vic production which sizzles with raw emotion.

As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski. Visionary director Benedict Andrews returns to the Young Vic following his Critics’ Circle Award-winning Three Sisters.

Have you seen Woody Allen’s take on A Streetcar Named Desire in the film Blue Jasmine with Cate Blanchet? “Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire remains among the most complex female characters in theater — tragically vulnerable and self-deluded on the one hand, coolly manipulative and even wily on the other. But Benedict Andrews’s ferocious new production of Williams’ immortal play is the first I’ve seen to make plain that this honey-voiced aggressor can give as good as she gets. So much so, that the defining tussle between Blanche and her nemesis, Stanley Kowalski, elicits conflicting sympathies as seldom before.“ —New York Times
